DoT may give BSNL a Rs 10,000-crore breather soon

The telecom department may allow struggling Bharat Sanchar Nigam a breather by excluding Rs 10,000 crore it is likely to get from the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF) for implementing two government telecom ventures while computing licence fee.

State-run BSNL is likely to receive the amount from the USOF kitty over next three years for rolling out mobile networks in India's naxalite hotbeds and handling 70% of the trenching and cable laying costs in the national broadband venture, popularly known as the national fibre optic network (NOFN) project.

BSNL Voice SMS facility and tariff under 2G and 3G GSM Services…

PAN India Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the launch of new Voice SMS facility (a service which enables a subscriber to record a message or greeting and send it instantly via SMS) under Prepaid and Postpaid GSM Services.

A uniform rate of Rs.0.75 shall be charged for Sending / Replying / Forwarding of Voice SMS for Local, STD and National Roaming calls and also for Retrieval of Voice SMS in Home LSA and National Roaming too.

Court sides with BSNL on ending telegram services:

 Madras High Court in India has dismissed two petitions that sought to force the continuation of BSNL's telegram service.

   BSNL ceased providing the service in July arguing that modern alternatives such as mobile phones and e-mail are available now, the Business Standard reports;.

   BSNL said it incurred losses of INR 14.73 billion due to the steep drop in telegraph usage since 2006.

The court agreed with the company that several fast, economic, and reliable alternatives are available and dismissed the two petitions.

India's new mobile radiation norms from September 1

As per the new rule put in place by Telecom Ministry, the exposure of radiation emitted from a mobile phone over a gram of human tissue should not be more than 1.6 watt if a consumer uses it for six minutes.
